Basingstoke Bluefins New Year Meet (2012)

Over 50 Windsor swimmers had entries for last week-end's Basingstoke New Year Meet representing all competitive squads up to County level - a total of 28 Clubs were competing at this very busy Meet.

This was a new meet for the Club and for some it was their last opportunity so get those elusive first County times before this month's entry deadline. For others it was an opportunity to swim at their first competitive meet and for some of the more experienced competitors was a chance to improve their PBs and shake off the post Christmas cobwebs.

The team was managed by Head Coach Matt Heathcock and the swimmers responded brilliantly to Matt's encouragement and positive feedback throughout the week-end and in total came away with 21 event wins, a total of 55 medals and a number of County times from non-County squad swimmers. Congratulations in this respect to Dan Parker, Leo Haitzmann, Zebina George, Bryony Chinn, Conor Tobin and Sam Ramsden-Head who are now eligible to join the other members of the Club that are entering next months County Championships.

Other event winners were Crispin Imami, Luke Withers, Rami Elias, Kai Furnell-Brennan and Ben Quirke.

Memorable performances across the week-end included a number from the 200m Breaststroke including a County time from Rueben Walsh which was unfortunately ruled a DQ, Poppy Pope's valiant swim having lost her goggles in a winning (County) time bar an unfortunate DQ, and arguably the race of the week-end, which saw an heroic battle between Aran Gill and Kai that went down to the wire with Kai prevailing on the very last stroke.

The squad were enthusiastically supported throughout by the vociferous Windsor supporters who managed to occupy prime seats in the very busy seating area and thanks must go to the squad for showing great talent in seat-reservation as well as their swimming talents!

Matt said "it was a great start to 2012, with so many PB's, medals and County times – congratulations to everyone!"

The next Meets for many of this group of swimmers will be our own Level 2 meet and then on to Ealing in February as well as forming part of the Thames Valley Junior league squad.
