Teaching Squads - Beginners

Beginner 1 - Overview

The Beginner 1 class swim once per week for 30 minutes in the shallow water.

They are swimming to the equivalent Level of ASA Stage 3.

Swimmers are taught good body position and focus on developing their skills in the water (forward rolls and handstands) to progress their understanding of breathing when in the pool.

They are taught to push and glide; and to finish the correct way for each stroke.

Swimmers are taught to swim the full distance without walking and taught all different leg kicks.

Swimmers in this group are not yet eligible to race.

Beginner 2 - Overview

The Beginner 2 class swim once per week for 30 minutes in the shallow water.

They are swimming to the equivalent Level of ASA Stage 4.

Swimmers are taught to breathe correctly for all four strokes and maintain a good leg kick and body position whilst swimming.

They are introduced to push and glides and correct finishes for each stroke.

Swimmers are taught to practice exercises carefully and the focus of this group is to produce swimmers able to perform excellent leg kick over all strokes whilst breathing correctly.

Swimmers in this group are not yet eligible to race.

Beginners 3 - Overview

The Beginner 3 class swim once per week for 30 minutes; this is the highest level group in the shallow water.

They are swimming to the equivalent Level of ASA Stage 5.

Swimmers are working on developing good basic timing and consistent breathing patterns over all four strokes that can be maintained when the swimmer moves into deep water.

They are taught to use push and glides and correct finishes throughout the lesson.

Swimmers are expected to focus on practicing carefully and showing control in their strokes along with legal leg kick for all strokes according to ASA standards. 

Swimmers in this group are not yet eligible to race.
