Windsor Swimmers take English Nationals by storm to bring home two Gold Championship medals

Cameron Moffat – National 50m Freestyle Champion (Mens Open)
Moritz Hoogers – National 200m Backstroke Champion (16 yrs)

Two swimmers from Windsor Swimming club have beaten the best in the country to claim two gold medals at the English Summer National Swimming Championships, which took place at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.

Cameron Moffat, aged 20 years, claimed the ultimate prize to become the National Champion of the flagship Mens 50m freestyle Open event with a personal best score of 23.63 seconds.  Fellow Windsor club swimmer Mortiz Hoogers, aged 15 years also secured gold in the 200m Backstroke (16 years category) in another personal best performance of 2.12.32 seconds.

Cameron Moffat’s achievement of winning the prestigious Gold Medal in the 50m freestyle mens open event at the English Nationals was all the more impressive, as he was ranked in just 7th place going in to the final following the earlier heats.  During the highly charged final race comprising some of the fastest sprint swimmers in the country, Cameron gave an outstanding text-book performance to clinch the gold from the race favourite.

Commenting on Moffat’s achievement, Giuseppe Caporaso, Head Coach at Windsor Swimming Club said, “The Mens Open 50m Freestyle event is always the most fast, furious and highly anticipated race of any swimming meet, so to watch Cameron swim to victory and become National Champion was an incredibly proud moment.  It just shows that you can never predict the outcome of a race.  Although all eyes were on the two fastest ranked swimmers in the middle lanes, Cameron gave a truly determined and powerful swim from the outside lane to take victory on the final touch, in stunning style.”

Also representing Windsor Swimming Club in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke events was 15 year old Moritz Hoogers.  Moritz gave a tremendous performance, powering through the heats to qualify for all three event finals, and just missing a podium place when he finished 4th in the 50m Final and 5th in the 100m Final.  However, his determination continued and victory eventually came when he took first place in the last few metres of the Mens 16 years 200m Backstroke Final.

Head Coach Caporaso continues, “Moritz has worked incredibly hard in training and this hard work and determination has definitely paid dividends this weekend.  I’m delighted by his consistently high level of performance.  He gave a series of strong and gutsy swims, achieving some fantastic personal best times, gained qualification in to three Finals and of course, his gold medal and National title as the 200m Backstroke Champion.”

Windsor Swimming Club Chairman Devon Wilks adds, “Not only are these tremendous personal achievements for both Cameron and Moritz, it also puts Windsor Swimming club firmly on the map of the country’s most elite swimmers.  To have such high class national athletes in the club will also act as a significant motivator to all of our young, up and coming swimmers, in particular for the squad of junior competitive swimmers that Cameron coaches.”

Windsor Swimming club is based at Windsor Leisure Centre, offers opportunities for swimmers of all ages and capabilities, from its Learn to Swim groups through to its Competitive Squads which include regional, national and International athletes, as well as a successful Masters group.
